Caleta Los Arcos - Fun Sea Caves and Arches

Here's to life outside the lines.

From cave to sea, the view is stunning
As its name implies ‘Cove of the Arches’, this little cove has some arches and caves along its coastline. They are carved out of white, pink and grey-purplish rocks overlooking bright aqua water. Once near the arches or caves, it’s not only the sights that catch your eyes but the sounds also fill your ears and send vibrations down your belly and spine.

Bahia Santo Domingo - Alone with Thousands of Sea Shells and Crabs

You miss 100% of the shots you never take.

Nikki on a crab trail...
(we actually call them water lizards for she recognizes the word lizard)
Known mostly as a stopover to other destinations, this bay doesn’t have any trails to follow, palapas to eat at or purchase supplies from so many people don’t stay here long. We have spent three days and really enjoyed having the beach to ourselves, swimming in the 86 degree water, finding other neat geological formations we hadn’t seen yet coming up this side of the Baja coast, and sorting through the amazing variety of shells found along the beach or imbedded in the rocks.

Bahia San Nicolas - A Small but Important Rescue

You can always replenish your bank account,
But you cannot reclaim time.

Delicious Mahi-Mahi for dinner tonight
Not much to say about this area except that it is surrounded by sand dunes, cows walk back ‘home’ along the beach in the evening and pangas come and go by to fish the deeper areas. There is a very small village about 4 miles away, too far to walk so we do not visit.

Sculpted rocks
Coming to this cove makes you truly appreciate raw geology. There are so many types of rocks and dirt, caves forming, layers exposing, erosion paths, colors, folds, lines, pleats, points, dips, overhangs, crevasses, veins and other formations; it is extremely varied and interesting. Many rocks end at water level or slightly below depending on tide so one has to be extremely watchful coming here by boat.

Isla Coronados - Odd Toothy Fish

Whether it's the best of times or the worst of times,
It's the only time we've got.

Main Baja land across Isla Coronados west cove
We left Puerto Balandra by mid-day, one of the latest departures we ever made for there were no winds in the morning and thankfully we have daylight until about 8:30 pm and the sail is only 12 nautical miles. The winds are slight and finicky and we are surrounded by land on nearly all sides so we keep changing how we sail our course. Moreover, we encounter currents so it is a tricky sail.

Puerto Balandra, Time to Snorkel

When one is pretending, the entire body revolts.

Where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez
After a slow sail getting out of Puerto Escondido, we glided some waves at 8 knots, having to slow Déjàlà down a little before arriving at Puerto Balandra. We are in another beautiful anchorage, this time at the north end of Isla Carmen.
